disAbility.gov Announced - A New Access America Site

On July 26, 2000, in conjunction with the celebration of the 10th anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act, President Clinton announced a new website, Access America for People with Disabilities or disAbility.gov (http://www.disAbility.gov). This site, created by the Presidential Task Force on the Employment of Adults with Disabilities, will serve as a one-stop information source on Federal programs, services, and resources of interest to Americans with disabilities, their families, employers, and service providers. It will also serve to promote awareness of disability issues to the general public.

Two years ago, President Clinton created the Presidential Task Force on the Employment of Adults with Disabilities to develop a coordinated and aggressive national policy to bring adults with disabilities into gainful employment at a rate as close as possible to that of the general adult population. Inasmuch as the Task Force currently consists of 18 cabinet-level departments and agencies, disAbility.gov represents an interagency collaborative information dissemination effort of unprecedented proportions.

The breadth of the site is apparent from the topical areas which currently include:

Children & Youth
Self-Employment & Entrepreneurship
Transportation
Health
Choice & Self-determination
Employment
Recreation & Travel
Civil Rights
College & Adult Education
Housing
Technology
Income Support
Tax Credits & Deductions
Emergency Preparedness
Disability Statistics

disAbility.gov joins Access America for Students, FirstGov for Seniors, Access America for Business, Access America for Workers, the Access America E-Gov E- Zine, and Access America for Exporters, as the latest addition to Vice President Al Gore’s Access America initiative. The Access America initiative, which is all about putting people "online, not in line," calls upon the Federal government to use information technology to deliver government services tailored to particular consumer groups’ needs anytime, and anywhere.
