June 14 is Alois Alzheimer's birthday! Who is Alois Alzheimer? He was the German neurologist who in 1907 described the symptoms and neuropathology of a degenerative brain disorder. His name is now forever linked with the disease that is described in the last Surgeon General’s Report on Mental Health as “one of the most feared mental disorders because of its gradual, yet relentless, attack on memory.” The Center for Mental Health Services (CMHS) embraces this opportunity to highlight Alzheimer’s disease during the month of June. They have a special feature “Alois Alzheimer's Birth Anniversary June 14, 2002” where you can link to research reports, publications on care and treatment of Alzheimer’s disease, and other related topics. This information is useful for loved ones, caregivers and health professionals. CMHS is making this FREE resource available to anyone with an interest in this devastating mental health disorder. New knowledge and ongoing brain research are bringing hope to those who live with Alzheimer's disease and to their families and loved ones. CMHS is a division of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA).
